Morzine recce – Day 1

Urgh! We’ve just woken up and are feeling the adverse effects of a heavy night on the sauce (must be the altitude!).

We arrived in Morzine yesterday afternoon and spent the day driving around exploring the area to get our bearings. We had a drive around Morzine, Les Gets and up to Les Prodains cable car station which ferries people up to Avoriaz. We drove through Montriond, which is linked to Morzine, and up to Lake Montriond, a very picturesque and popular hang-out in the summer, apparently. We then headed over to Essert Romand to have a pre-viewing nosey at the chalet and a couple of building plots we’d booked in to view the next day.

We left the UK with the number of a friend-of-a-friend who is also British and has lived in and around Morzine for years. He’s an advanced ski instructor in the winter and a builder in the summer. He’s a similar age to us with a young family and we were hoping to pick his brain about as many things as we could if we got the chance to meet up.

We pulled over in Essert Romand at about 5.30pm to give him a call figuring he’d probably just finished work and might be around for a chat. It turns out he was and he’d just popped into Dixie’s Bar (one of Morzine’s most famous) for a beer with one of his lads. We dropped the car back at L’Igloo and strolled down for a beer.

Gary stayed for a couple then headed home for dinner with his family. His foreman Juan, however, convinced us to stay for a couple more (not much convincing required). What is it with getting carried away on the first night of a holiday? “We’ll just take it steady tonight so that we’re OK tomorrow”… (immediately followed by a massive session). I think it’s an unwritten universal law! Anyway, it turns out that Juan was a great laugh, but when I became aware that I was slurring my words pretty badly and swaying at the bar,  it was time to head off for pizza and bed.

We demolished our pizzas sitting in bed watching French TV and drinking as much bottled water as we could manage. It wasn’t long before we drifted off, but we didn’t get much sleep – too hot, too cold, too much spinning and too much effort trying to keep the pizza down. Shudder!
